چکیده

This is an entry for The Encyclopedia of Statistics in Behavioral Science, to be published by Wiley in 2005. A large number of computerized scaling techniques were developed in the wake of the pioneering work of Shepard, Kruskal, and Guttman [4, 5, 6, 8, 9]. There have been various attempts to bring some order into this bewildering variety of techniques. Books such as Roskam [7], or review articles such as De Leeuw and Heiser [3] are organized with a clear taxonomy in mind, but the most well-known and comprehensive organization of scaling methods is due to Carroll and Arabie [1]. Before we discuss the taxonomy, we have to emphasize two important points. First, the proposed organization is clearly inspired by earlier work of Coombs [2] and Shepard [10]. The exquisite theoretical work of Coombs was written before the computer revolution, and the scaling methods he proposed were antiquated before they were ever seriously used. This had the Date: July 23, 2004.

Theory of Multidimensional Scaling

It is difficult to give a precise definition of MDS, because some people use the term for a very specific class of techniques while others use it in a much more general sense. Consequently it makes sense to distinguish between MDS in the broad sense and MDS in the narrow sense. MDS in the broad sense inc ludes various forms of cluster analysis and of linear multivariate analysis, MDS in the nar...

Multidimensional Scaling in the City-Block Metric: L1 and L2-Norm Optimization Methods Using MATLAB

In a recent paper by Hubert, Arabie, and Meulman (2002), a comparison is made among several different optimization strategies for the linear unidimensional scaling (LUS) task in the L2-norm, with all implementations carried out within a MATLAB computational environment. The central LUS task involves arranging the n objects in a set S = {O1, O2, . . . , On} along a single dimension, defined by c...

Linear Unidimensional Scaling in the L2-Norm: Basic Optimization Methods Using MATLAB

A comparison is made among four different optimization strategies for the linear unidimensional scaling task in the L2-norm: (1) dynamic programming; (2) an iterative quadratic assignment improvement heuristic; (3) the Guttman update strategy as modified by Pliner’s technique of smoothing; (4) a nonlinear programming reformulation by Lau, Leung, and Tse. The methods are all implemented through ...

Effects of Far- and Near-Field Multiple Earthquakes on the RC SDOF Fragility Curves Using Different First Shock Scaling Methods

Typically, to study the effects of consecutive earthquakes, it is necessary to consider definite intensity levels of the first shock. Methods commonly used to define intensity involve scaling the first shock to a specified maximum interstorey drift. In this study the structure’s predefined elastic spectral acceleration caused by the first shock is also considered for scaling. This study aims to...
